Mobility Anxiety! And the Blonde Baker!

I am excited to share my new blog with you! This whole parenting-triplets-thing requires serious baked good consumption, so I decided to channel all the time I spend baking, reading cookbooks and sharing treats with friends into a blog all it's own. Please come check it out- and try a recipe or two. (I also heard a rumor there is a picture of me on the About page. Just sayin'.) I am The Blonde Baker!

Back to our (semi-)regularly scheduled programming.

We are entering new territory here, folks. MOBILITY. Although the babies have yet to sit up without some major assistance, they are figuring out how to move. Quickly. Usually toward a sharp object or one of their sister's choking-hazardesque toys. We are entering an uncharted territory of "busy".

It is usually my mom and I (thank heavens for her!) all day with the trips and A, so we usually rotate who rushes upstairs to get ready or shower in the mornings. We take our iPhones and text if help is needed. Usually, things go fine, although I may end up holding two while pacing if they are fussy, or she could have to hold Cheeks while feeding Ace his breakfast. It's just the usual "double-arming-it" that we do daily.

Ace and O-Bear

Increasingly, the babies have been more and more content playing on the floor with lots of toys and one of us sitting with them. I usually have to adjust baby limbs so they don't conk each other in the face, sing songs with hand movements or pick up a fussier boy pretty much constantly. A few days ago, early in the morning, I was sitting on the floor drinking decaf, while A watched "Sesame Street" and the boys played. Pretty soon Cheeks became fussy and needed to be held, so I picked him up and sat him in my lap. Then A needed help in the bathroom, so Cheeks and I went to help her. By the time I got back, O-Bear had army crawled all the way to the ottoman and was half way stuck underneath it and Ace had rolled about 20 feet to the hardwood floor and bonked his head in the process. My mom rushed down to see what the hysteria was about, and all I could do was stand there, holding two crying babies, with a look of terror a glimpse of what was to come on my face: MOBILITY.

I believe the thought, "We are SCREWED!" ran through my head in stereo.

The new challenges now are not that they refuse to be set down, but that when they do, off they go in THREE directions! I knew this stage was coming, but I did not expect it yet! They cannot even sit up- what do they think they are doing, rolling/crawling/getting stuck already! We live in a three story home with hardwoods throughout the main floor and many a dangerous staircase entrance. The stairs need to be gated, the hard edges padded, and the choking hazards removed from the family room (by the way, all four-year-old girl toys are choking hazards).

Let the baby-herding begin!

Cheeks in the bath! Seriously, have you ever seen any cuter ones?

  1. Hi. I am a fellow triplet mom, and a occasional peruser of your blog (which I must've come upon by googling this or that a while ago). My babies are close the adjusted age of yours, so it's been fun to compare/contrast our pregnancies and newborn adventures. I hope I don't seem stalkerish. We are just so similar in our circumstances that I have to check up now and then to see if you are having as much insanity/pure joy in your lives as we are. You are a great writer, and always leave me wanting to read more (partly because, with us being a month or two ahead, I can totally anticipate what you will write about next. Yeah, mobility is something to be very afraid of.) Thanks for the place to commiserate and be entertained. You know I needed it during bedrest, and reflux, and all the other fun times that come with this amazing job.

  2. That's my biggest worry right now and I only have 2!! We chose a room in our 3 story house as well, and we decided that will be their room. Any where else in the house they can not go unless accompanied by a mommy , daddy, or big bro/sis. I don't think it's mean, it's safe.
Have you looked into maybe a Play yard? I mean, we mom's are human and need to pee / shower and cook.... Maybe that would help keep the babies safe with out you being there for a min or two at a time.

  3. I'd be super worried about mobility, as well! I think it's only natural.

  5. Oh boy, I mean boys! How about one of those pen things? Play pen I think we call them in England. Or get a company that usually baby proof's the house to baby proof the babies!!
What ever you decide, good luck to you :-)

  8. Mobility.
    *sigh*
Yes, the end of an era. I have no doubt that you will find the best way to keep them semi-contained and safe. I must admit when ours started crawling I thought my life was ending. And now they are running around like crazy... and we make that work, too:).

Looking forward to following the blonde baker...

  10. Yes yes yes, this is a challenging time. Though you will bumble your way through (or maybe you'll be more organized and efficient than I, ha ha) and before you know it, everything will be old hat and a new challenging phase will begin (I say this in the midst of pottytraing my twins, heh)
    .
I was never one for babyproofing every last thing, but I did find I needed to do more with twins than my singelton, since they are left to their own devices a bit more often. I was lucky that my oldest was not old enough to have gotten a ton of things with tiny parts when my babies were young, but we did have "high" shelves for her stuff and some things were for "kitchen table" (or her room) only. I also did utilize a pack & play for awhile in the kitchen for containment, and later a superyard that babyproofed our porch for the summer.

The image of you & your mom texting is hilarious. I would just holler and yell, and that didn't always work!

  13. I have one 8 month old who's mobile. I can't imagine what it's like with THREE of them. That just scares me thinking about it. Have you thought about getting one of those baby pens, yet? I've heard they're pretty great for use with a lot of young babies.

  14. I'm sad to see that you're not blogging about the boys as much. I randomly found your blog months ago and have learned so much from it. I've been waiting for the blog about pumping that you hinted at months ago. I've got ten week old twin boys. Please don't stop!

  16. Carrie! Your babies are adorable, and I hope that the mobility stage is going smoothly ;) The best thing is to definitely block all the stair cases and buy as many baby-proof tools to protect your little angels!! Thanks for sharing your experience. All the best - J.
