Ask Carrie! (and cervical showing-off)

At the risk of sounding like a complete braggart, my cervix grew again. Today it measured at 2.8 cm - 3.2 cm. Again, the cervix is a dynamic muscle which changes over time and will likely shorten as time goes on, and we expect it to as the triplets' birth draws nearer. I can hardly believe it actually grew. (I was a bit afraid to blog about it but I knew there would be an email onslaught if I did not update.) Today showed stability which translates into more time at home with the family.

Today the babies (except B, who was being a bit lazy actually) showed off their breathing, even fluid, and good Doppler measurements. Dr. W insisted I get a flu shot and reminded me how bad it would be for me to get the flu while caring for three preemies or for them to get it at all. I did, and took comfort knowing that it grants the preemie babies some immunity from the flu after birth. I am sure I do not need to tell you how immature preemie babies' immune systems are, and how protection for them is critical.

Here is Cutie Pants Baby C:

As promised, I bring you the first ever edition of Ask Carrie! I get many questions in the comments section from anonymous readers and some of you who I know well. I thought I'd give you a chance to ask questions- really about anything. No need to make them fertility-related or about pregnancy unless you choose.

As a reminder, I will not reveal doctors' or hospital names, our fertility clinic or any other info like that on the blog. If I know you, I will be happy to talk with you on email, so leave me a way to contact you if you'd like.

Looking forward to reading and answering them! I am still writing my post about privacy, pictures and identifying information about our children. Cassandra, in her usual pesky, thought-provoking form gave me even more to consider so it will be delayed a bit.

Oh, did I mention: 2 DAYS UNTIL 28 WEEKS? No? Well it is less than 48 hours now!

  1. Absolutely amazing news! I'm so happy to hear your news! I'm still over here concentrating on the number 34 :)

I'm wondering, will your house be big enough to handle a jump from 1 to 4 children or do you think you'll move? Just trying to picture myself in your position - I love my house and it would hold 1 or 2 children just fine but if I found myself with 3 or 4 we'd definitely be moving! ;)

  2. The delay is my revenge for your cervix running circles around mine.

  3. Dang, 'cuz what I really wanted to ask is, did you use the same clinic we did?! (seems like a pretty good chance from various contextual info) But I don't reveal my clinic on my blog either so there you go, a pretty useless question.

I guess a more serious question... how do you and your sweetie plan on handling the care of 3 newborns at once?

Congrats on your expanding cervix, that is great news!

And isn't it great when they start really looking like individuals on the ultrasounds and not just generic babies-in-making?

  4. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! :D BTW, you probably have read a lot about all this already, but I just came across a section in the book I am reading which said that the boys tend to be stronger (growth as well as even if premature) in case of twins/super twins because of their testosterone! I think your dudes are definitely going to prove that! :)

  7. Congrats Carrie! I just started following your blog. At 15 weeks pregnant with triplets of my own, I'm am hoping your story will mimic our own. I can only hope for the best for you and your crew as well as ours. My question is of course going to be pregnancy related - since you are doing so awesome, what are some things looking back you'd recommend to a girl in your situation that have gotten you this far - foods that kicked your protien intake, special awareness you had with your body - anything that has gotten you this far???

  14. Congratulations at being almost 28 weeks, Carrie! I've been following your blog since you found out you were having triplets, but I haven't posted before. I don't have a question for you - I just wanted to introduce myself and tell you I'm really happy things have gone very well so far!

  15. YOu are absolutely doing it! The babies look great and no signs of labor. I believe you are going to have 3 healthy boys! I'm so excited for you. I know you already have one daughter (I have just the one as well) and sometimes I am EXTREMELY exhausted. I always want new moms to know that even when you are most exhausted (after those boys are here and healthy) that it is ALL worth it! Make sure you take help when it's offered and don't think you constantly have to clean your house (like I did). Those boys will be much more important and taking care of you little girl is, of course, important too :) Congrats on all of the wonderful progress!

  16. I've been reading for a while and delurked once or twice to comment but wanted say YEA for such awesome news!! I have a friend down the street who is also pregnant with triplets and will be 30 weeks tomorrow. I'm 31 weeks with just one and I can't imagine what you guys are going through! Anyway, I know with your diligent bed rest that those boys will hang in there for at least another 6 if not 8 weeks :) Take care and keep up the good work!

  17. Awesome news!

As I'm getting ready to start my first IVF cycle, I'd like to know whether you think there is anything you did that "upped" your chances? Serious or funny, what did you do to stay sane?

I'm SO proud of you and the boys!

  20. C is indeed a cutie pie! Three cheers for your growing cervix and an extended stay at home with your husband and daughter. I can't believe you're almost at the 28 week mark. 32 weeks, and then 34 weeks here we come!

The GGGs are doing great too. I'll post an update later this weekend.

Question: what does a contraction feel like for you? Mine haven't been painful, I just get super short of breath, and my tummy feels rock hard. How long do yours last? The beginning of the contraction is very distinct, but I don't always pay attention to when it ends, so sometimes it just feels like one contraction runs into another.

  21. Been lurking following for a while, so, so pleased you have got this far - I'm hanging on every post! Question from another ectopic/multiple miscarriage gal - did your clinic do anything special for this cycle?

Fingers crossed for it to get even more crowded in there :-)
