The Return of OHSS

Well, after the long week with OHSS, it was starting to look and feel better by Monday. Then, on Tuesday, I woke up all inflated like the Goodyear blimp and today is worse. I called the nurses to let them know, as instructed, and they talked to me for a while about the symptoms, before deciding I needed to be seen.

I rolled myself into the office (I am quite roly-poly) and had a visit from Wanda and some blood work. They also measured my abdominal GIRTH. It is girth all right.

Here are the take-aways:

1. It is worse. My ovaries are touching in the middle, which sounds cute, but hurts like a mother. They don't want me to lift anything (like my child) as they are concerned about ovarian torsion. That can cause the loss of an ovary.

2. There is a good amount of free fluid in my "third space" or peritoneal cavity which is not a good thing.

3. They keep telling me that I am likely pregnant (YAYY!) since the symptoms are worse and exacerbated by pregnancy... but no, they won't do a blood test yet. Stop asking.

4. If it gets worse, they will drain my abdomen. That is about as much fun as it sounds.

5. I am awaiting blood work to check for liver/kidney function.

6. I am now "moderate" and will probably require more monitoring (read: Wanda visits, and extra driving).

So all in all, I am pretty frustrated that it is getting worse and we can't do anything besides manage my symptoms. Pain? Percocet or Tylenol. Nausea? Anti-nausea meds. You look like a hoss? Deal. I am secretly happy that this could indicate pregnancy and am oh so hopeful that I will have good news soon. Oh, the things we do to have babies.

  6. Yuck,
I hope the OHSS is indicating pregnancy and that it also goes away quickly. The OHSS, not the pregnancy, obviously.

  8. I am just thrilled for you because I think this is a VERY good sign.

Here is my assvice since I managed to get through 1 severe OHSS case and another, just recently, not so bad case:

PROTEIN...As in 200 grams a day. Protein acts like little sponges that take that fluid to your bladder to pee it out. The more protein, the more fluid you will drop. It works.

ACUPUNCTURE... I literally get off the table and have to pee.

I know how frustrating this is having delt with it first hand. In fact, I am still on a protein diet (now 6wk3d) because if I don't, I will blow up like a balloon too. It only get's worse because of pregnancy.

BTW, 5 days before my beta, I gained 5 pounds overnight one night and 3 the following two nights. I immediately started eating protein and have lost all but 4 pounds. There is still "free fluid" around my ute, but it is managed.

Okay, I am off my soapbox now! I think this is a REALLY good sign. :)

  9. Is it twisted that I'm a little happy to hear about your OHSS because it likely means good news re: the results of this fun little cycle? (Of course I want you to feel better, I'm just excited for what it all could mean!)

Anyway, the drugs probably talking, so I should sign off. Thinking good thoughts for you! :)

  10. The best source of protein, I have found, is called a protein shot. You get it at GNC or I order mine online at

    http://www.allstarhealth.com/f/ids-new-whey_liquid_protein.htm

These little three ounce bad boys pack 42 grams of protein per shot! And they only have 176 calories. It's nice because then you don't feel like you have to eat all the time. They taste like jello (Fruit Punch is my fav). Of course after taking 1-2 a day for over a month, they are getting kind of old, but they work. They are a little pricey though. I ship mine 2 day and it costs me about $42 a week. (A box of 12 lasts me about a week)

Also, do you eat turkey? Turkey has 37 grams per 5 ounces....and it is low in calories too.

  11. Thanks so much Chelle! Scrambled eggs are getting so old, so I really appreciate that! I am going to send my husband to GNC tonight! :)

  14. Carrie: I know this is an old post... but I am waiting for my ER and I have like 50+ follicles in there and I am shit scared about OHSS! So was just looking up posts related to OHSS. Lucky you that your OHSS was tagged along with a BFP.
